Intern Highlights

This summer, GROW La Crosse has been working with four interns who have helped out in the gardens and in the classroom while promoting all GROW La Crosse has to offer.

Emily Johnson, the media/marketing intern for Grow has been taking photos, running the Facebook page, and writing blog posts (including this one!) for GROW.  Her favorite part about the summer was getting the chance to work with kids, be outside in the fresh air, and brainstorm new blog ideas.

Marlana Lamar is the first of three Garden Education interns. She worked at State Road Elementary this summer, doing some teaching and helping out in the garden. In her favorite lesson she taught, she guided the students while they made kale chips and planned a photo scavenger hunt for them. She praised the kids for being so helpful in the garden!

At Spence Elementary, Ashley Claussen taught lessons in the garden for grades 1st through 5th.  She started out every lesson with a tour of the garden so the kids were familiar with what was growing and where. She led a math activity where the students measured how tall and how far apart the herbs were growing and they got to use those measurements to create their very own herb bed. Ashley included a harvest day for the kids where they got to keep the food they picked, which was the highlight for the students!

Patricia Esparza is just beginning her teaching lessons at Hamilton/SOTA Elementary. She has spent the summer organizing a Family Harvest Night for the school’s garden. Her goal was to bring in families to work in the garden and harvest their own food to take home with them. She was successful in her planning and Family Harvests Nights will now be held every Wednesday from 5pm-7pm at Hamilton/SOTA!
