Hamilton visits Deep Roots Community Farm
This week Hamilton Elementary School took field trips to Deep Roots Community Farm (DRCF). DRCF hosts summer camps and field trips for GROW. Students from Hamilton were able to get out and experience the farm and take part in some really cool projects! Thank you to the La Crosse Education Foundation for making this possible.
Ana, the owner of DRCF, showed the kids their green house and explored the different herbs and vegetables they grow. The tomatoes were ripe, and plenty were taste-tested and eaten by the kids. They discussed kale and everyone picked a few leaves for a project they were about to try.
After everyone had a few leaves of kale, they wandered off to the side of the field where a bike blender was set up. It was a stationary bike rigged up to a blender. They prepped the kale on a side table and added yogurt, berries, bananas, and orange juice to the blender as well. Everyone took a turn on the bike and when the smoothie was finally blended, it was shared among the kids. They loved it!
This afternoon adventure finished with exploring the animals of the farm. There were two very cute sets of piglets and baby chicks as well. Everyone left with smiles and good memories of the farm.
