Hintgen Volunteer Day This Saturday
Although the winter seems to be hanging on this year, we know that spring is just around the corner! We, here at GROW, are looking for volunteers to help prepare the NEW Hintgen Urban Garden (HUG) for planting!
We invite you to come lift, push, and pour with us to help add new soil to the garden beds! The more the merrier!
**Bring garden gloves if you have them!**

Pollinators!
We are now through our 3rd week of the Pollinator Patch Program and we have made loads of progress and had tons of fun! So far in our program days we’ve learned about pollinators’ role in our food supply, played pollinator games, and designed pollinator homes. Each has helped deepen our understanding of what healthy pollinator populations can do to improve local ecosystems.
In our first session, our Hamilton/SOTA team traveled to the Washburn Community Garden and our State Road team to their own perennial garden at school and observed and discussed ways we could transform the space into the Pollinator Patch which would include food, water, shelter and breeding grounds for local pollinator species. The second week has been our planning week where the teams are creating designs for their pollinator homes. Students are including measurements and labels in their designs; in addition to, considering aesthetics and reusable materials to increase the success of the structure in attracting and housing the pollinators as well as maintaining sustainability in our project’s practices.

Intern Spotlight
Hi! My name is Claire Bowar, and I am a junior at Viterbo University studying Nutrition and Dietetics. I enjoy being outside in my free time, whether it is running, hiking, or swimming. I also love to travel with my family, and this summer we have a trip planned to Alaska. Last summer I helped my mom, who is a teacher in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin connect students to the school garden through the summer school program. Additionally, as a Nutrition and Dietetics student at Viterbo University, we have worked with developing lesson plans and implementing them in schools in the La Crosse area. Overall, I enjoy the platform that a garden gives to students, as they are able to learn so much without the feeling of being lectured at in a classroom. I can’t wait to connect these students of yours to everything that the garden has to offer!
