After School Composting

While the snow and cold still blankets the gardens, there has still been opportunity for garden education!  Students at Hamilton, Hingten, and State Road Elementaries have been participating in an after-school composting program.  Students have been learning how compost piles heat up and break down natural materials into nutritious soil supplements.

GROW invited Hillview Urban Agriculture Center to help teach students about different types of composting.  In late February, students received a visit from Hillview’s vermicomposting worms and a reading from the locally produced educational book “Worm McWorm & the Decomposers” by Nick Nichols.

Check out the news coverage.

La Crosse SOUP

Thank you to everyone for coming out to La Crosse SOUP at Pearl Street Brewery. Although we didn’t win one of the grand prizes, we were fortunate to receive $250 from the La Crosse Community Foundation towards an outdoor kitchen at the GROW Hamilton garden. Thank you, also, to La Crosse SOUP for allowing us to share our outdoor teaching kitchen project and to Pearl Street Brewery for hosting this great event.
