Will Allen Visit

Will Allen visited one of our Grow La Crosse School gardens!  Students at State Road Elementary were able to meet and thank him.  His workshops inspired Grow La Crosse leaders to build the hoop house.

Students got to ask a lot of questions.  Many wondered about his favorite fruits, vegetables and animals while others asked more about his work at Growing Power.

Then he came around and saw our hoop house.  What a pleasant surprise.WillWasHere-17 WillWasHere-25

New Session Added to Farm Camp

With farm camps filling up, we were able to add another camp to our offerings this summer.

Summer on the Farm

Dates:  August 3,4, 5 ∙  Ages 5-13

Farm 8Description:  During farm programming, children engage in the real daily work of the farm including animal care, building and maintaining natural habitats, and helping grow food.  Children will plant, tend, and harvest fruits and vegetables and explore in great depth the source of our food.  They’ll learn how to grow and raise food using organic and sustainable farming methods and learn about why we have chosen those methods.  We’ll enjoy the food we’ve tended by using the best of the harvest to make wood-fired pizza in our bread oven.  We’ll also emphasize forging connections with the natural world.  Children will learn how to identify species and the role individual species play in the larger ecosystem, and we’ll leave ample time for free exploration and play in nature and take on nature-based projects led by student interest.  In this session, special emphasis will be placed on understanding habitats, for both humans and other animals.

All programming is led by Ana Skemp, M.S. Ecology, owner of Deep Roots Community Farm and Lila Planavsky,  M.Ed. and teacher at Summit Environmental School
