12.1.2023 Giving Update • Why The Sustar Family Supports GROW

Giving Gratitude

Twenty-two GROW supporters helped us kick off giving season with a bang.  After Giving Tuesday we are 1/3 of the way to our year end fundraising goal thanks to the generosity of this small group of individuals.  We are thankful for each donation big and small.  Every contribution made goes directly to programs that make a difference in the health of children in our community.

Many students come to school hungry or fueled by foods that do not support their nutritional needs. GROW is on a mission to connect youth to healthy food and nature through hands-on garden-based learning to nourish growing minds and bodies. We know that the best way to encourage a child to make a healthy food choice is to involve them in the process from seed to table. That is why we host garden lessons at 9 area public schools, farm experiences, greenhouse field trips, Kids Cooking Challenges and Open Garden programs. In 2023 our programming has engaged over 3,000 youth in the Coulee Region in discovering where their food comes from, how to access healthy foods and how make healthy food choices.

A group of GROW supporters have pooled their resources to create a matching fund.  The first $2,500 donated will be matched.  That means you can double your impact by donating today!  Help us reach our year end goal to continue making a positive impact.  We need the support of the community to make these opportunities possible. Please consider donating to make a difference in the health of the youth we serve today and for a lifetime.

The Sustar Family Supports GROW

Emily Sustar, parent and owner of The Motherhood Collective shares why her family supports GROW.

“This holiday season my family and I are grateful for GROW and all the work they do in our community to connect children to real, sustainable food.  I first discovered GROW when I began offering children’s yoga classes at Deep Roots Community Farm in collaboration with GROW for school field trips.  Our collaborations continued as I offered family yoga classes at their Fall Festival on the Farm.

When my children were smaller we loved attending workshops, classes, and special events on the farm.  Once my children were school aged the GROW gardens and school programs became a big factor in deciding what school to choose.  We were grateful to find the many programs, educators, and classes that GROW offers at SOTA 1 school and throughout the district.  My boys have also loved attending summer camps at the Farm!

Our family is very grateful to have access to whole, sustainably grown foods, but we acknowledge that not every family has that privilege.  That is why this giving season we are donating to GROW to support their mission in providing access and education about these foods and growing practices to all the children of La Crosse.”
