3.6.25 Fourth Grade Feature • Plant Sale Save the Date
Fourth Grade Feature Greenhouse field trip groups get to explore hands-on learning stations tailored to the topics each grade is learning about in science class. One fourth grade focus area is soil types or rocks and minerals. While visiting the greenhouse fourth graders get to see and feel samples of four different soil compositions. We discuss how just sand, silt or clay alone aren’t good for most plants to grow in. A loam made up of equal parts of sand, silt and clay will have more nutrients and properties that allow for the right amount a drainage and moisture retention. Loam is best for most produce to grow in. We also demonstrate how roots help hold soil in place to prevent erosion. Erosion causes problems if the nutrient rich topsoil gets washed away. A simple demonstration using grass roots to hold soil in a bottle has students in awe of the impact plant roots make in holding the soil in place. |
