Busy Season: Fall Garden Lessons

The school gardens have been buzzing with pollinators and busy students.  The pollinator habitats planted by students and community earlier this season have invited so many learning opportunities and pollinator friends into the gardens this fall.  In the first garden lessons of the fall students learned about how plants attract different types of pollinators by growing in unique colors and shapes.  There were so many examples of pollinators and flowering plants to observe.  In their second lesson students got to sample a “Three Sisters Salad” made from corn, beans, zucchini and cilantro, many of the ingredients were grown in the gardens. We used the “Three Sisters” indigenous story to illustrate the power and history of companion planting.

This week we start the final fall garden lessons, which will focus on seeds and how they travel from place to place. Students will learn how to harvest and save seeds for the next season, how to identify some seeds by sight, and will prepare the garden for a winter’s rest.

Our educators are teaching approximately 2135 students three lessons at 8 elementary schools in the span of two months. The impact is immense. We are grateful for the classroom teachers who find time in their busy schedules to prioritize these garden lessons.  We are also grateful to the team of GROW educators who spend hours in their outdoor classrooms on warm sunny days and cool windy days to share these meaningful experiences.

Great GROW Get-Together

Thanks to all who came out to support garden education at the Great GROW Get-Together.  It was a celebration of all of the meaningful and impactful engagement that happens when youth have the opportunity to learn about where their food comes from through hands-on garden based experiences.  If you missed the event and would still like to donate to help us reach our fundraising goal you can follow this link.  Every donation makes a difference in the lives of the youth we serve.

Community Exploration Family Day at the Farm

We had a beautiful morning for the Community Exploration Family Day at the Farm over the weekend.  Our hosts Ana and Andy at Deep Roots Community Farm, medical intern Tanner and special guests Ho-Chunk Nation Legislative Representative Jessika Greendeer and Department of Agriculture staff member Andrew Rave shared so much knowledge and engaged participants in hands-on learning.
