1,000 Garden Lessons

Join us to celebrate our 1,000 hands-on garden lesson.

We are excited to have our 1,000 hands-on garden lesson taught at our first school garden.  “We started at State Road five years ago and now we have raised beds, a hoop house, and a permaculture area,” says Jamie O’Neill. “We appreciate our sponsors, donors, grant funders and community members who make our programs possible through volunteering, participating, and financially contributing.   Together we are making our community a healthier place to live.”

GROW La Crosse has helped to build and maintain 12,000 square feet of garden space at State Road Elementary, Hamilton & SOTA I Elementary, Spence Elementary and Hintgen Elementary. These gardens help incorporate fresh produce into cafeteria, offer hands-on garden education sessions, connect garden-based science lessons to the curriculum and collaborate with after-school and recess programs.

Pollinator Patch Program

The Pollinator’s Patch Project is an after school program through GROW La Crosse that will provide older elementary students with an opportunity to participate in a project-based, environmental program with a focus on native pollinators and their habitats.  For this project, we are partnering with an after-school Running/Biking club at State Road Elementary and the Robotics Clubs at Hamilton and SOTA I.

We are halfway through our Pollinator Patch Program and we have made loads of progress and had tons of fun!  So far in our program days we’ve learned about pollinators’ role in our food supply, played pollinator games, and designed pollinator homes.  Each has helped deepen our understanding of what healthy pollinator populations can do to improve local ecosystems.

We have started installing some of the homes.  Check it out.
