La Crescent Grand Opening
Our newest Grow Garden at La Crescent-Hokah Elementary School in Minnesota celebrated their grand opening. We are very fortunate to have garden lessons being taught at this school by a familiar face, Susan Oddsen. Check out our Facebook video of the grand opening here.
Intern Spotlight
Abigail Hutson just finished her summer internship helping with gardens at Hamilton Elementary, State Road Elementary School and Gundersen childcare center. Thank you for everything you do Abby!
Abby said: “I grew up right outside of Madison in a town called McFarland my whole life. I grew up always wanting to be a teacher, but then came to UW La Crosse and fell in love with health. I am a Public Health major at UWL and hope to eventually work with mothers and babies. I wanted to intern with GROW to learn more about gardening, introduce healthy nutrition to kids, and explore the nutrition side of health. I get such a rewarding feeling seeing kids try new things and watching the plants grow.”
FREE Insect Activities on the Farm
Date: Sunday, September 9th
Time: 2pm-4pm
Location: Deep Roots Community Farm
Join Barrett Klein, Biology Professor at UWL for a class full of art and insects. We will collect and identify insects, and learn about their unique morphology, behavior, and physiology. After getting to know some of these basic facts, we will move into a lesson in scientific instruction of insects. Barrett studies insect behavior, sleep biology, and explores the ways in which insects have affected humans throughout history. He studied entomology at Cornell University and the University of Arizona, received a Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin, fabricated natural history exhibits at the American Museum of Natural History, and joined UWL in 2012 as an assistant professor of biology.
This class is now free due to the generosity of attendees at our Growing Generosity event.
