Grow Your Own Snack

A student cutting his own radishes.

Last week, elementary students from the La Crosse area school district attended a summer school class offered through GROW at the Spence Elementary School Garden. The class was all about learning to grow and make your own healthy snacks. Students learned to make dill dip, salad dressings, pesto, and smoothies using ingredients from the garden.

Students were very enthusiastic about the healthy snacks they made themselves and one even commented, “This is the best summer school class I’ve ever done.”

Other activities included scavenger hunts in the garden, spending time in nature and making bird feeders from recycled goods. All the recipes from the snacks made were put into cookbooks created by the students so they can continue to enjoy healthy snacks at home!

Join our program staff and learn to plant, tend and harvest in the gardens, meet and care for the horses, chickens, and pigs. We will also go out on a nature walk to look for wild edibles and end the day wading in the creek. This day is open to everyone but it is directed towards families with younger children with specific opportunities for them.
